Breakdown on a Rural Road? What to Do Until Help Arrives

Planning a road trip through Northland? Whether you’re heading to the Bay of Islands, Cape Reinga, or exploring the Tutukaka Coast, the last thing you want is a breakdown ruining your journey.

Here’s how to prepare your vehicle before hitting the road — and reduce the risk of car trouble along the way.

1. Get to a Safe Spot (If You Can)

Pull over as far off the road as possible, ideally on flat ground

Turn on your hazard lights to alert other drivers

If it's a narrow road or blind corner, place your emergency triangle 50–100 metres behind the car (if safe to do so)

If the vehicle stops suddenly and you're in an unsafe spot, stay inside with your seatbelt fastened until help arrives.

2. Stay Visible

Keep your hazard lights flashing

Raise your bonnet — it’s a universal sign of a breakdown

Use a reflective vest or light if walking near the road at night

This helps alert passing vehicles and emergency services to your situation.

3. Assess the Situation

if you’re confident and it’s safe:

Check the dashboard for warning lights

Try restarting the car once (don’t keep cranking the engine)

Look for obvious issues like a flat tyre or steam from the bonnet

Don’t attempt repairs if you’re unsure — safety comes first, especially on unfamiliar roads.

4. Call for Help

If you're in or near Whangarei, call Snow Bros Auto & Electrical for local support. We’ll do our best to assist directly or arrange for trusted roadside services to reach you.

Be ready to share:

Your exact location (use GPS or landmarks)

Vehicle make, model, and registration

What happened and whether the car is drivable

Who’s with you (for safety and support)

If you’re out of mobile coverage, try walking to higher ground or the nearest house or driveway. Many locals in Northland are happy to help contact roadside support on your behalf.

5. Stay Put & Stay Safe

Wait inside your vehicle if possible — it's safer than standing near the road

Avoid draining your phone battery

Keep hydrated and warm (carry snacks and water if you’re travelling remotely)

If you need to leave the vehicle for any reason, leave a note with your name, number, and the time you left.
